Andrew LaFollet was born somewhere on the planet Grayson, most likely during the year 1872 Post Diaspora (which in both our dating system and the one used on Grayson, would work out to be the year 3975.)1 In the current timeframe of the series, he is around 48 years old. As for his physical appearance, he is a small man. He is tall for his planet, though; most Graysons are short compared to the rest of the galaxy's general population. He has dark auburn hair (usually cut short) and gray eyes.
He has spent all of his adult life working to protect other people. Before entering the Harrington Steadholder's Guard, he served as a member of Palace Security for 10 years, guarding the residence of the Protector of Grayson. During his last two years there, he served as a small arms instructor. During his time with the HSG, he has been its second-in-command and the commander of Steadholder Honor Harrington's personal security detail. On his joining the HSG, he held the rank of major. He is currently a lieutenant colonel.
Andrew is a polite man, but extremely stubborn. He always believes he knows best where his lady's safety is concerned, and is usually correct on that point. He is not afraid to contradict her, or to tell her what he thinks of his orders. He is occasionally referred to as paranoid by other people because of his overprotection of his lady. He is highly observant in all situations. He is so observant, in fact, he is one of the few people who recognized that Honor Harrington was an empath without being told about it.
He does have a habit of blushing when embarrassing subjects are mentioned, or when he is being personally complimented. He appears not to be quite comfortable with being singled out, or noticed. He is unobtrusive when on duty, and tries to keep all traces of emotion from showing.
Not much is mentioned about his extended family. His older brother also served in Palace Security, as a member of Protector Benjamin's personal detail, and was killed during the Maccabeus coup attempt. Andrew joined the Harrington Steadholder's Guard because he felt that his family owed life debt to Honor Harrington for her prevention of the coup and the avenging of his brother's death. His sister Miranda was formerly Steadholder Harrington's personal maid; her position has evolved to that of chief of staff of Harrington House. Their cousin Jennifer is nanny to the Steadholder's younger siblings Faith and James.
As for other offhand facts, he is a baseball fan. He learned to swim soon after entering Honor's service, and discovered that he liked it; this is odd because open water on Grayson is toxic, and swimming pools were unknown until one was built for Steadholder Harrington. He has no talent for mimicry of foreign accents. He cannot seem to talk any way but soft and slow.
1) There are three passages in the series stating that Andrew is 13 years younger than Honor Harrington, so his age during the series would be based on hers. According to this, he is most likely 33 years old when he first appears in the series. However, War of Honor contradicts the earlier comments about his age, and he is seven years younger than Honor there. There has been no official word on what this is supposed to mean.
